Elegant matched pair of antique English jasperware candlesticks by Adams of Tunstall, Staffordshire. Each features a rich matte cobalt-blue ground embellished with finely applied white sprigged relief decoration depicting classical figures, trees, foliage and neoclassical ornamental borders. Dramatic spreading bases are decorated with large white acanthus leaves and a delicate repeating border.
Both are impressed on the underside “ADAMS ESTBD 1657 / TUNSTALL ENGLAND.” Beautiful examples of early 20th-century English jasperware and a striking alternative to Wedgwood for collectors of Staffordshire pottery, neoclassical décor and blue-and-white ceramics.
