A charming example of 19th century English pottery, this Staffordshire-style figural inkwell depicts a recumbent greyhound or whippet in classic black-spotted white glaze, resting atop a cobalt blue cushion base with gilt line accent. The ink reservoir opening is set into the side of the base. Hand-painted details include a brown snout and red collar stripe, characteristic of the period’s folk pottery tradition.
A wonderful piece for the collector of antique inkwells, Staffordshire figures, or canine-themed antiques — equally at home on a writing desk or in a curated display.
