Wonderful antique heavy pewter ice cream mold, believed to be French and made by Charles Cadot & Cie, an early manufacturer of decorative hinged ice cream molds. The mold is marked “CC” and appears to have a mold or pattern number as well.
This substantial example has an unusual pedestal or goblet-shaped form and opens on hinges to allow the molded frozen dessert to be released. These molds were used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to create elaborate individual ice creams and frozen desserts for formal dining.
Measures approximately 5½–5¾” high x 4½” wide and weighs approximately 1.4 lb.
Antique condition with substantial age-related patina, oxidation, surface wear and irregularities as shown. The seams, hinges and closure areas should be reviewed closely in the photographs. A terrific piece of early culinary history for display in a kitchenalia, ice cream, restaurant or pewter collection.
For decorative/collectible use only — antique pewter molds should not be assumed food-safe, as period pewter can contain lead. The Smithsonian gives the same warning regarding historic pewter ice cream molds.
