Antique salesman’s sample and trade display box from the Detmer Woolen Company, dated Fall & Winter 1903–1904. One of the earliest known surviving examples of Detmer’s iconic sample boxes, predating the company’s formal 1906 incorporation.
The hinged cardboard box opens to reveal three interior compartments with ribbon dividers and a stunning lid interior featuring three engraved vignette scenes of well-dressed Victorian figures in period interiors. The drop-front panel displays a large engraved formal gathering scene flanked by printed samples lists — “Black Cloths and Doeskins,” “Blue Uniforms and Cadet Cloths,” “Imported Black Drap d’etes,” “Fancy Vest Buttons,” “Silk and Mohair Braid,” and “Silk and Satin Body and Sleeve Linings.”
The exterior is covered in burgundy textured board with gold script lettering: Detmer Woolen Co. / Fall & Winter 1903–1904 / London · San Francisco · Seattle · Chicago · New York. The back panel retains the original consignment notice: “Every set of samples we furnish is sent out only on consignment and remains our property to be returned on request.”
Condition: Heavy wear consistent with age and use — corner wear, surface scuffing, moisture staining to back panel. Structure intact; graphics vivid and complete. Samples not present.
