What time is it? The most beautiful hour, naturally — because this extraordinary Victorian mantel clock stopped there and decided to stay.

A genuinely unusual marriage of two decorative traditions, this Gilded Age showpiece pairs a dramatically ornate cast metal Rococo clock surround with a lush hand-painted ceramic vase body. The clock case is a tour de force of high Victorian excess: scrolling acanthus leaves, pierced cartouche crest, flower rosettes flanking the oval face, and a convex glass crystal over a warm salmon-toned paper dial with crisp Roman numerals. Below, the bulbous ceramic vase body is painted with water lilies — yellow petals, coral-red centers, deep green ground — in the loose, impressionistic style of American art pottery decorators working in the tradition of Rookwood and Weller. The whole piece rests on an elaborate cast metal footed base with rope-and-bead detailing and scrolled feet.

Condition: Very good for age. Clock movement does not run. Minor wear consistent with age and use. No cracks or chips noted to ceramic body. Some patina and surface wear to metal elements, adding to the period character.
