E.N. Welch Manufacturing Co., Forestville, Connecticut — one of the most respected names in 19th-century American clockmaking. This striking wall clock features a large circular hammered brass surround with a beaded inner rim, centering a hand-painted tole panel depicting a Victorian flower basket overflowing with roses, tulips, fuchsia, and wildflowers on a deep teal-gray ground. The original white enamel clock face is fitted into the painted panel with a gilt brass bezel, Roman numeral chapter ring, and subsidiary seconds dial. The brass movement retains its original winding arbors and hanging bracket.
The painting is accomplished and detailed — consistent with the quality tole decoration popular in American parlors of the Aesthetic Movement period. The hammered brass border is a hallmark of the Arts and Crafts-adjacent decorative work of the 1880s. A piece that functions as both functional timepiece and Victorian wall art. Condition: Original surface throughout with age-appropriate patina and wear. Movement present and winds; running condition not guaranteed — sold as a decorative antique. Some paint wear to tole face consistent with age. Brass surround retains strong hammered texture.
