Antique German porcelain wall clock featuring a charming blue and white Delft-style transfer print decoration. The square porcelain face with softly rounded corners is decorated with classic Dutch genre scenes: a pair of children in traditional dress and wooden shoes on either side of the dial, a harbor scene with sailing vessels at top, and a windmill with waterfront buildings at the bottom. The clock face is marked “EIGHT DAYS” and “GERMANY,” dating its manufacture to after 1891, when US import law required country-of-origin marking on exported goods. Circa 1890 to 1920.
The 8-day spring-driven movement is housed in its original cylindrical tin case, mounted to the reverse of the porcelain plate. Three winding arbors are present. The original metal hands are intact. The hanging loop on the reverse is intact. The movement has not been tested and is sold as-is for display or as a candidate for restoration by a clock enthusiast or repair person.
The porcelain face displays age-appropriate surface crazing and minor soiling consistent with its age. The tin movement housing shows paint loss and surface oxidation. Overall a very presentable and decorative antique piece with strong visual appeal.
A lovely accent for a farmhouse, cottage, or European country interior. Also a great candidate for a Delft or blue and white collection.
Dimensions: approximately 8.5 inches square. Movement depth adds approximately 3 inches.
Condition: Antique. As-is, untested movement. Porcelain face intact with age-appropriate wear. See all photos.
