A rare and captivating piece of American horological and retail history — a Boston Clock Company desk clock retailed by Black, Starr & Frost of New York, housed in its original embossed leather case with a pierced brass bell grate on the reverse. Circa 1909–1912.

The dial is signed in two locations: Black, Starr & Frost / New York and Boston, confirming this clock was sold through one of America’s most prestigious luxury goods houses — the same firm that counted among its clientele the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Roosevelts. The movement back plate is stamped Boston Clock Co. / Boston, U.S.A. with serial number 21324 B, placing production squarely in the earliest years of the Boston Clock Company’s operation as an affiliate of the Chelsea Clock Company.

The embossed leather case has the look of a well-traveled gentleman’s desk companion — richly textured, darkened with age, with honest surface wear and crazing consistent with its 115+ years. The oversized pierced brass medallion on the back is both decorative and functional, designed to project the bell tone. Four drilled holes flank the dial face, characteristic of this case style.

The brass bezel shows lovely verdigris patina. The paper dial is foxed and oxidized — aged and atmospheric, fully legible, and irreplaceable.

Movement appears complete. Clock is not currently running and would benefit from professional cleaning and service. Sold as a collector’s piece or for restoration.
