Wonderful antique American stoneware preserve/storage jar, dating to approximately the late 19th century (c. 1870–1900).

This substantial utilitarian jar has a warm brown/tan exterior with wonderful age-related surface texture and a dark brown glazed interior, consistent with an Albany-slip-type glaze. The heavy rolled rim, wheel-thrown construction and irregularities give it the authentic primitive character collectors look for in early stoneware.

Originally made as a practical household vessel, jars of this type were commonly used for storing preserves, pickled foods, butter, lard and other pantry staples.

Condition: Good antique condition with expected surface wear, scratches, glaze irregularities and small chips/nicks around the rim. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the condition description. No maker’s mark has been identified.

A beautiful piece of 19th-century American utilitarian pottery that displays wonderfully in a primitive, farmhouse, country or early American collection.
