Rare antique self-humidifying tobacco canister by the Rumidor Corporation, New York City, dating to the 1920s-1930s. The Rumidor was a patented innovation in tobacco storage, using a built-in water reservoir system in the domed lid to maintain ideal humidity for pipe or cigarette tobacco. The inner cap is marked IN and ON for moisture regulation. Base is stamped Pat. Applied For, Reg. U.S. Pat. Office, Rumidor Humidor, Rumidor Corporation New York City, confirming this is an early production example predating or concurrent with patent approval. Constructed of brass-plated copper with a fitted domed lid, stepped neck, and smooth cylindrical body.
The piece displays a rich, heavily patinated surface with natural tarnish, oxidation, and age-appropriate wear consistent with a century of use. The humidifying mechanism is intact. A compelling piece for collectors of antique smoking accessories, tobacciana, Americana, or early 20th century patent novelties. Also makes a handsome decorative canister or desktop accent.
Condition: Good antique condition. Heavy patina and surface oxidation throughout. Structurally sound. Humidifying mechanism present and intact. No lid damage. Some pitting to exterior consistent with age. Dimensions: Please inquire for exact measurements.
